Theatre 7’s Jerry Johnson had a busy Celebration weekend, assisting artist Shani Goss on a very special art gig.
The painting project, a privately funded tribute to the late Mayor Mike “Tuna” McElroy located on the West-facing wall of 240 N. Park St, began on Thursday, August 6th and was finished up Saturday night. It was a major talking point during the 2015 Decatur Celebration as festival goers stopped by to check on the artists’ progress throughout the weekend.
“I was really excited Shani asked me to help her turn her design into an amazing mural downtown,” says Johnson, himself responsible for the Stephen Decatur mural on the back side of Central Illinois Title Co. at 145 S. Water St. “Shani isn’t a big fan of heights, though she did manage to get up to twenty feet off the ground to paint the bottom of the mural. I was really proud of her for doing that.”
Johnson will soon follow up this mural with another of his own design.
